Listerosis outbreak
Listerosis outbreak with Dr Aaron Motsoaledi
An outbreak of foodborne listeria bacteria has claimed 36 lives and infected almost 600 people in South Africa.Health minister Aaron Motsoaledi is in in SABC news room to unpack more details about the disease. Minister mentioned that listeria is been in 40 years ago the first time was diagnosed in South Africa. In every year south African hospitals see between 60 and 80 patients and he made clarity it has been always like that in the past 40 years.Because listeria occurs widely in nature and is found in soil, water and is found in vegetation. Now if it can gets its way to the food we are going to eat then we get listeriosis and we now infected we might get sick of which we might recover or we parish. He said it is full treatable although it has killed 36 people, it is the same as TB it kills people every year but it is treatable.
The data is there for people suffered in listeria in the past but listeria was still an unnotifiable disease. Any body can be infected by listeria but there are a group of people who are particularly and vulnerable, these are newborns in the 28 years of life, pregnant women because when women are pregnant their immunity is not strong, the people who's immune systems has been compromised by conditions and diseases like people who living with HIV/Aids , diabetes, cancer, chronic kidney and chronic liver disease they are specifically vulnerable.
Listeria does not move from one person to another the only way we can be infected is for us to contaminate the food and I come we inject that food. The symptoms that we have to notice is flu likes symptoms, headaches, fever, diarrhea general body pains, weakness vomiting etc. That is the first group of symptoms that we have to notice and you can get septaemae meaning your whole body is infected.we must go consult doctors immediately we feel unwell.
I am against food contamination shame!!
ReplyDeleteif you mix uncontaminated food with contaminated food then we come consume the food definitely we will be infected.

ReplyDeleteenvironmental health doctors must come with the cure for this disease, we know here in south Africa we are lacking environmental health so this can also create job opportunities.
